Alejandro Olmo Bazan was born in 1959 and is married with two sons. Since his chilhood he has loved to paint. He used to paint over the pictures in his school books. Then in 1976, he enrolled in the Universidad de Guadalajara to study art and sculpture.

Alejandro has been fortunate to work with some of the finest ceramic artists in Mexico. While living in Tonalá in 1984, he was introduced to Jorge Wilmot, a recognized worldwide master of ceramics. He studied with him the modeling of modern figures — his inspiration for designs coming from traditional techniques.

To learn about glazing his ceramics, Alejandro was fortunate to work and study with Fernando Carmona.

Inspired by the whimsical and unique barro betus (glazed with a special birch resin) figures of Candelario Medrano, he found new foder for his imagination. Many of his sculptures are plant pots in the shape of women's heads — some are anatomically correct to just below the shoulders. He enjoys making sculptures that have a practical use and personalities.

But probably the broadest influence on Alejandro's work came from the pre-Hispanic designs of Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit. He began to study about the Aztec calendar. Realizing the deep significance of the Aztec calendar, he delved deeper into the meanings of the glyphs and drawings associated with it.

He then began to study the Maya calendar, called Tzolkin, and now uses this calendar to chart in today's world. He has found that the Mayan charts apply perfectly to our lives today.
