Wearable Textile Art
Edilia, Edit, Luegas
Luis is 39 years old and is a self-taught seamstress. She has been making
clothing for her family since she was very young and has been creating
her own designs from indigenous fabrics for the last 20 years. Each is
a unique and one-of-a-kind original.
In today’s
world of style, unique clothing is frequently referred to as wearable
art - individually designed pieces of hand-made clothing (in Edit's case)
or jewelry created as fine or expressive art. While the making of any
article of clothing typically involves aesthetic considerations, the term
wearable art implies that the work is intended to be accepted as a serious
and unique artistic creation or statement. Pieces are often sold and/or
exhibited.
The modern
idea of wearable art seems to have surfaced in the 1930s in the United
States and Europe. Since the nature of the medium requires craft skills
as well as artistic skills, an advanced artist can be expected to have
knowledge of color theory, chemistry (for dye techniques), sewing, clothing
design. Edit is the embodiment of all of these traits.
Edit's inspiration
is from the challenge each exceptional piece of her "wearable art"
brings to her. When working with cloth that is unusual or has a special
design, she must discover the best way to use it. You might say, she is
an "engineer" of clothing.
As artistic
creation has gone across the ages, it has traveled through assorted fads
& trends. Edit's clothing is timeless. The wearable arts are not just
for fashionable New York models anymore. Wearable art clothes are rapidly
turning into one of the most simple ways for women to “make a statement”
about who they are.
